    Measuring the Effects of Multi-Sensory Stimuli in the Mixed Reality Environment for Tourism Value Creation

    This thesis explores the impact of technology-enhanced multisensory stimuli on visitors' value judgments and behavioural intentions at tourist attractions. The study is based on the Tourism Value Framework (Smith and Colgate, 2007), which examines the influence of tourism environment and experience cues on tourist behaviour. To achieve the objective, four key areas were critically reviewed: 1) value creation in attraction-based tourism, 2) multisensory experience literature including experiencescape research, 3) immersion, and 4) mixed-reality technology (Objective 1). Primary data collection involved two research phases. The first phase included ten semistructured focus group interviews with visitors at two multisensory mixed-reality tourism locations in Finland (Objective 2). These interviews provided insights into visitors' perspectives on value formation, immersive experiences, and mixed-reality technologies. Thematic analysis of the data revealed five themes and seventeen subthemes, including context-specific subthemes, which contributed to understanding the multisensory tourism experience and technology-enhanced experience. Based on ten hypotheses, a qualitative S-I-V-A value creation framework was developed for technology-enhanced multisensory mixed reality tourism environments. The second phase aimed to examine and validate the proposed model by collecting survey responses from 317 visitors to a multisensory mixed reality tourist environment. Covariance-based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM) was used for data analysis (Objective 3). The research's significant achievement is the creation of the S-I-V-A value creation framework for technology-enhanced multisensory mixed reality tourist environments, derived from the study's discoveries (Objective 4). The thesis concludes by summarizing the theoretical contributions of this research and offering recommendations to developers and designers in the tourism and mixed-reality sectors. It acknowledges the study's limitations and suggests potential directions for future research

    Refining the Economic Dimension of Carroll's CSR Pyramid by Taking Organization Form into Account

    In 1991, Archie Carroll presented the CSR pyramid, which has since become a widely recognised conceptualisation of corporate social responsibility. Responding to recent suggestions that understanding of the pyramid should be evaluated with regard to particular organisational contexts, the paper proceeds from awareness that not all corporations are owned by shareholders. Analysing qualitative data from consumer co-operatives, the authors conceptualise the economic responsibilities of these and consider them in light of prior definition of corporate economic responsibilities, to abstract a more general definition of corporate economic responsibility. The article is, to authors knowledge, the first one to address the implications of organizational form in economic responsibilities of a company.Peer reviewe

    Meanings Attributed to Physical Activity and Changes in Self-Reported and Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity among Recent Retirees

    Retirement poses opportunities and challenges for maintaining and adopting physically active habits, which may have major implications for health and functional ability in later life. Qualitative studies suggest that a broad range of meanings of physical activity should be considered when promoting physical activity among retirees. The current study utilized the Physical Activity Relationship (PAR) approach to examine the importance of meanings attributed to physical activity and their associations with physical activity over time. A total of 230 recently retired participants (65.2 years old, 83% women) responded to a 54-item inventory assessing the importance of meanings attributed to physical activity at baseline. Eight meaning dimensions were identified through exploratory factor analysis. Differences in their importance across gender and occupational background were examined using t-tests and ANOVA. Associations between meaning dimensions and self-reported and accelerometer-measured physical activity over 12 months were examined with general linear models. Dimensions defined as Physical Fitness, Positive Mood, and Belonging were positively associated with changes in self-reported and accelerometer-measured physical activity. Additionally, the importance of several meaning dimensions varied across occupational background. In conclusion, physical activity promotion among retirees should focus on physical fitness, positive mood, and social belonging. Furthermore, meanings attributed to physical activity may vary across occupational backgrounds

    Directed energy deposition of AA7075 - effect of TiC nanoparticles on microstructure

    AA7075 alloy is a high-strength aluminum alloy with properties enhanced by heat treatments. However, like most high-strength aluminum alloys, AA7075 is non-weldable, as it suffers from hot cracking when it is welded or additively manufactured with fusion techniques. A proposed way to reduce the hot cracking tendency is by refining the microstructure by adding nucleation enhancers. In this study, AA7075 powder feedstock was functionalized with 1.7 and 3.4 vol.% TiC nanoparticles, printed with laser-directed energy deposition (DED), subjected to T6 heat treatment, and characterized with optical and electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and hardness measurements. Although TiC was not homogeneously distributed in the aluminum matrix, the addition of TiC successfully suppressed hot cracking by inhibiting dendritic growth produced by increased and more uniform nucleation, which resulted in refined equiaxed grains, and thus enhanced the printability of the material.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    High-speed laser cladding of chromium carbide reinforced Ni-based coatings

    Fusion-bonded and low-diluted overlay welded coatings are frequently very thick (>1mm). High-speed laser cladding is a novel process capable of producing thin fusion-bonded and low-diluted coatings with high coverage rates and low heat input. In this study, for the first time, high-speed laser cladding was used to fabricate relatively thin Ni-based coatings reinforced with chromium carbides onto low-alloy structural and quenched and tempered steels. Obtained coatings were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical (OM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Mechanical and wear properties were tested with Vickers microhardness measurements and three-body dry-sand rubber wheel abrasion tests (RWAT). It was shown that high-speed laser cladding produces 0.2-0.3 mm thick coatings, which consist of ultrafine-substructured hypereutectic M7C3 structures reinforced with coarser primary Cr3C2 particles. Coatings with hardness up to 1300 HV0.05 exhibited high wear resistance in low-stress three-body abrasion. Coatings developed can be used as alternatives for hard-chrome plated coatings.Peer reviewe

    The Impact of a 12-Month Activity Tracker Intervention on Activity Behavior Across Body Mass Index Subgroups Among Recent Retirees: Post Hoc Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

    Background: This study examined the effectiveness of a 12-month activity tracker-based intervention on activity behavior among recent retirees (Enhancing physical ACTivity and healthy aging among recent REtirees [REACT]) in subgroups based on body mass index. Methods: REACT trial randomized 231 participants (mean age 65.2) into intervention and control groups. Main outcomes were accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) and light physical activity (LPA) and sedentary time (SED) measured at baseline and 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. As a post hoc analysis, the intervention effect was examined among participants with normal weight (n = 77), overweight (n = 89), and obesity (n = 61). Results: An intervention effect was observed among participants with obesity in LPA (time × group P = .045) mirrored by a similar, albeit nonsignificant, effect in SED (P = .067), but not in MVPA (P = .92). A transient increase of 41 minutes per day (95% confidence interval, 14 to 68) in LPA was observed at 6 months among the intervention group, with a concomitant decrease of 42 minutes per day (−72 to −12) in SED. However, these changes were not maintained at 12 months. No between-group differences in changes over time were observed among participants with normal or overweight. Conclusions: Activity trackers may be particularly suitable for promoting changes in LPA and SED among older adults with obesity. However, their long-term effectiveness might be limited.</p

    Particle telescope aboard FORESAIL-1 : Simulated performance

    The Particle Telescope (PATE) of FORESAIL-1 mission is described. FORESAIL-1 is a CubeSat mission to polar Low Earth Orbit. Its scientific objectives are to characterize electron precipitation from the radiation belts and to observe energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) originating from the Sun during the strongest solar flares. For that purpose, the 3-unit CubeSat carries a particle telescope that measures energetic electrons in the nominal energy range of 80–800 keV in seven energy channels and energetic protons at 0.3–10 MeV in ten channels. In addition, particles penetrating the whole telescope at higher energies will be measured in three channels: one >800 keV electron channel, two integral proton channels at >10 MeV energies. The instrument contains two telescopes at right angles to each other, one measuring along the spin axis of the spacecraft and one perpendicular to it. During a spin period (nominally 15 s), the rotating telescope will, thus, deliver angular distributions of protons and electrons, at 11.25-degree clock-angle resolution, which enables one to accurately determine the pitch-angle distribution and separate the trapped and precipitating particles. During the last part of the mission, the rotation axis will be accurately pointed toward the Sun, enabling the measurement of the energetic hydrogen from that direction. Using the geomagnetic field as a filter and comparing the rates observed by the two telescopes, the instrument can observe the solar ENA flux for events similar to the only one so far observed in December 2006.     Tämä opinnäytetyö selvittää hissin rakentamista vanhaan asuinkerrostaloon sekä sen eri rakennustyövaiheita. Työssä käsitellään ensin teoriaosa kuudesta työhön liittyvästä osiosta ja sen jälkeen teorian soveltamista työmaan käytäntöön. Viimeiseksi käsitellään vielä omaa osaamistasoa ja sen kehittämistä. Tässä työssä käsitellään asuinkerrostalon hissilaajennuksen eri työvaiheita rakennusurakoitsijan näkökulmasta ja sovelletaan teoriaa käytännön työmaaoloihin. Työssä käsitellään kohdetta, jossa hissi rakennettiin talon ulkopuolelle. Teoriaosuudessa on käytetty enimmäkseen Rakennustieto Oy:n kirjallisuutta sekä aiemmin opittua teoriaa. Työn tavoitteena oli saada kokemusta hissien jälkiasennuksesta kerrostaloihin ja toiminnan kehittäminen seuraaviin kohteisiin. Hissityö valmistui lopputarkastusta vaille valmiiksi opinnäytetyön aikana.This thesis presents the constructing of a lift in an old block of flats and describes the different steps of construction. The theory is explained first in six different work-related sections and then practical applications are discussed. Finally the authors level of knowledge and its improvement are pondered. In this thesis the different steps of constructing a lift in an old block of flats are described from the contractor’s point of view and theory is applied to real life construction sites. The thesis tells about a case where the lift was built outside the building. In the theory part, Rakennustieto Oy’s literature and previously learned knowledge were used
